Why You Should Go To Totnes Devon

Totnes - Devon is a western coastal city in England in the county of Devon. Such is its lovely landscape that it has been given the official title of "Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, " and honor rarely bestowed. This greatly improves the tourist trade, especially for those who enjoy the outdoors.

This town is very old, having a strong foundation in the dark ages. In the year 907 it was given its first official documentation that has lasted to the present. After three centuries of growth, this area was reserved for the homes of very prominent and wealthy tradesmen. Though not a noble area, it was not one to be scorned. Despite all of its long history, the population is still small today.

It is not only the population that has lasted this long. The wealth of the area makes it still a prosperous one. People who have difficult starting careers, like painters, writers, and musicians choose to move there. They are welcomed by many others. The town has produced several famous people and enjoys the artistic culture.

There are plenty of second hand stores and vendors who sell things hand-made. Many magazines have included this town on the list of the best New Age, Bohemian places to live. It has therefore produced a healthy share of artists of all different kinds, some reaching fame and fortune.

An interesting fact you may want to investigate if you plan on visiting is the currency system. The town mints its own pounds and uses them as any other English town would use English pounds. They are interchangeable in almost all stores in this location and perhaps in a few towns surrounding, though nowhere else in England.

The Norman motte-and-bailey Totnes Castle is a great landmark structure and a quite distinguished one for such a small area. There is also a huge medieval church which is standing strong today and a leechwell still provides drinkable water. It is an Elizabethan scholar's dream, since this is the period from which most of the historical buildings are from. The government pays for maintenance, so things are still very strong and well-tended to.

The area has decent education, including not only its own university but also its own university of the arts. Their schooling system is very old, though it is regularly updated to meet with modern standards. The school itself was established almost five hundred years ago and has transformed from a monarch-founded grammar school to a fully capable and well-rounded school.
