Newport Gwent - Vale of Glamorgan is located in South Wales on the River Usk. It is an old city that dates back to before 1400 A. D. Newport offers an excellent climate for visitors as well as residents and has culture, recreation and entertainment available for everyone.


The population of the Unitary Authority of Newport is over 140,000 persons. This makes it the seventh largest in all of Wales. The city of Newport itself ranks as the third largest in Wales. Newport is located in Gwent county and is ruled by the Newport city council.

Newport's location near the ocean helps to keep temperatures regulated. The gulf stream that moderates most of Great Briton means warm summers and cool winters for the area. It should be noted; however, that in 1930, the city recorded a low of -16.1 degrees C, which was the low of all of Wales for that winter. This occurred late in March and is still the record latest day for such a low temperature.

You will find plenty of leisure activities in Newport. The Riverfront Arts Centre offers many different types of entertainment including dance, drama, opera, music and comedy. Seats are available for just under 500 people. For an outdoor adventure try birdwatching at the Newport Wetlands Reserve where many species of birds make their home or stop for a visit.

To reach Newport you can travel using the car, train, bus or the air. An airport is located about thirty miles away from the city.

If you are looking for educational institutions, you will find that there are two campuses of the University of Wales located in the city. In addition you will find several primary as well as comprehensive schools.

Opportunities for sports abound in Newport. The Ryder cup will be played on one of the city's coursed during the autumn of 2010. Additionally there is Rugby and football. While most other British Baseball teams have disappeared, you can still find one in Newport. In addition you will find a very fine clay pigeon shooting range located in the city.

Religion in Wales is primarily Christian. At one time, the city was the center of Roman Catholic activity in Wales, but the city later lost their Bishop in 1916. Today there are more than 50 churches, 7 mosques and a synagogue.

Newport Gwent - Vale of Glamorgan is a city that offers activities for both visitors and residents. New housing is opening for persons that want to relocate to the area and there are several vacation cottages available for those that would just like to spend a holiday getting away from their normal routine.
