Tourism Opportunities In Thetford Norfolk

Thetford - Norfolk is an eastern English town not too far from London. It is decently sized (the population caps at twenty thousand) but remains a modest market town, like it has been through much of its history. The towns spreads out pretty wide, though, and covers a great deal of area, both urban and rural.

Many scholars believe this to be the court of historical Queen Boudicca. She fought the Romans when they first conquered Great Britain around the turn of the first century. Her tribe was the Iceni people, who were Celts native to Thetford. Her fame comes from gathering huge tribes of Celts from all over England, making the area good for studying all types of life from that era.

This was a time when England was very fractured. These tribes fought against the invading Romans under her leadership. She ended very famously: after defeating them in several battles, she was about to stage a decisive victory. She had one hundred thousand warriors against five hundred Roman soldiers. Shockingly, the Romans demolished the Celtic army and Boudicca committed suicide.

The river going through the area leads to a good crossing where many important armies and figures have traveled. Therefore tons of treasure has been found. The treasure from this town has been put in the National British Museum. It is great because it comes from so many different cultures which have been through the area. This includes not only Romans and Celts, but Saxons and Gauls, too.

There are plenty of medieval ruins, including a castle and a monastery--both of which are said to be haunted. A big press event happened when the cast of the television show "Ghosthunters" came to film in these locations and attempt to prove the 'ghosts' to be fake. As is typical of the show, they were able to disprove some ghostly events as having sound basis in logic and science. Other things they could not reason their way out of.

One of the most famous residents was Thomas Paine who wrote the book "The Rights Of Man." A statue of him and his both is in the town. Fittingly, this was also the first town in England with a black mayor, sticking to its tradition of being ahead of its time.

There is a cricket league and football team in the town. Though not one for huge events, it does have an Autumn Equinox festival. This allows people to get together and enjoy the astronomy.

The other portion of the economy--apart from catering to tourists--is meat. The town has many meat factories and butcher shops. Pork and bacon are the prime products and have allowed them to build the United Kingdom's biggest bacon factory.
