The town of Leyburn - North Yorkshire sits on the River Ure in the Richmondshire district. The town's name means clearing by the stream. A sturdy stone bridge from 1829 links Leyburn with the neighboring town of Middleham.
The town's Friday market, held in it's quaint center, has been occurring for so long that it is one of Yorkshire's oldest. Those who come to the market are treated to a display of basic foods and luxurious items including vegetables, fruits, sweets, bedding and fine china.
All around the square, visitors will find inviting pubs ready to serve them a pint of beer and food that is rich and hearty. It may be the perfect way to prepare for a day of sporting activities like hiking or fishing. For those who are not so energetic, a day at one of the inns on the square, relaxing with a good book might be a better choice. The market in the square can create an appetite for more shopping. If so, the town is home to Tennants which is among the most grand auction houses in England.
When visitors are ready to venture out of town, a trip to Forbidden Corner would take them into another world entirely. This Tupgill Park attraction, voted one of Yorkshire's best choices for children, is a combination garden and art installation. Leyburn sits at the eastern gateway to the Lower Wensleydale section of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Visitors can stroll from the town square to the Shawl where they can take in a sweeping view of the Dales. Sights range from Scandinavian carved stones to a bronze-age stone mound to medieval ruins and natural meadows.
Another way to reach the Dales is by riding the Wensleydale Railway. In 1855, this system of rail lines finally made its way to town, bringing travelers, parcels and milk. In 1954, after nearly one hundred years, the station closed. Too many people and manufacturers were choosing transportation by road over travel by rail. However, in 2003, the station opened again. In the future, the number of lines coming to town are expected to grow again.
Leyburn - North Yorkshire offers visitors many special events like the Dales Festival of Food and Drink and the Wensleydale Wander. Other, attractions like Forbidden Corner and the Yorkshire Dales are available all year. Combined with these sites, the Friday market and the pubs and inns make Leyburn a summer destination for many tourists.
