The Pioneering City Of Hull East Riding Of Yorkshire
The city of Kingston Upon Hull - East Riding of Yorkshire started as the small town of Wyke in the 12th century. The small town was built on land owned and occupied by Meaux Abbey. In 1293 King Edward I purchased the abbey and land of Wyke, and the town of Kingston Upon Hull was born.
The abbey continued as home to the monks for over 200 years, until it was closed and demolished in 1539. The town rapidly expanded, and was a key strategic town in many of the wars fought, due to the port of Hull. Kingston Upon Hull was granted city status in 1897. The growth of the city has been continuous. The 2001 census revealed the population was over 250000, occupying more than 100000 homes.
Hull is located 154 miles north of London, on the northern bank of the Humber Estuary. It is a vibrant city and a major port, with miles of dockland running along the river Humber. The town centre is home to many Victorian buildings showing off impressive architecture. The history of Hull is very apparent to anyone taking the time to look around.
