Bamboo is one of the most popular plants and it also seems to have more uses than anything else. However, how much do you really know about bamboo as the plant? If you are like more people then you might not know that much and that is why we are going to take a good look at bamboo.
First, bamboo is really part of the grass family and happens to make up the biggest part of that family. There are over 1,000 difference species of bamboo plant in total. When you think of bamboo, you really think of the Asian culture, but it actually grows natively all over the world. Most of it does grow in the tropical regions of Asia, but there is some native to the United States and even some in Africa.
Bamboo comes in many many different versions so to speak, they also come in tons of different sizes and heights. In fact, some of them like the timber bamboo can reach well over 100 feet tall without breaking. It's truly an amazing plant.
There are two main types of bamboo plants. The first is running bamboo which is really called Monopodial and then there is clumping bamboo or Sympodial. As you would probably guess, the running bamboo is the species that tends to take over everything and grows out of control. This is because of it's root system spread under the ground.
The second type of bamboo is called clumping bamboo. And as you would probably guess, it does not grow like crazy in all direction, but it stays in a tight area. This makes this type of bamboo is the kind you want to use as a plant in your yard.
Bamboo is so versatile because it can grow like crazy and it grows fast. So when you cut it down, it doesn't take long for it to replenish itself. The clum, or the stalk, is also so heavy and hard that it is used for so many things in our life. The most popular uses are for flooring, and clothing... and bedding is quickly becoming more and more popular.
