Professional Moving Tips
When you choose to hire a professional mover make sure to get at least 3 bids early on in the process. Six weeks prior to the move date is an acceptable time frame to allow different movers to asses what needs to be done and meet your delivery schedule
Moving companies can bid based on several different criteria. If this is a local move you will most likely get a bid based on time. They are not as concerned with the weight because they will not be going out of state. If this is a long-distance move you will most likely get a bid based on weight and distance. The four criteria are weight, distance, pieces, and time.
You should always ask for a binding estimate or a guaranteed price for the move. This helps you know exactly what this portion of your overall move will cost. In order to compare apples to apples you should make sure and pay attention to details while going over this estimate.
One of the most important things you need to do prior to the move or the estimate is a tour of your home. Start in the basement and work your way up to the attic making mental notes of what stays and what goes. This way when you do a walk through with a mover you can point out what they need to take and leave.
Picking the right time to move can save a lot of money. Summertime is the worst time to move as the demand during the summer months is highest. The end of the month will cost more and even Friday's of each week will be a bit higher. If you have the ability to move when you want make sure it is not the last Friday in August.
You will need to ask the mover you choose how they wish to be paid. In this industry it is quite acceptable for payment to be asked for when the truck is still loaded and sitting in the driveway of your destination. Some companies will unload the truck and then request payment. Be clear on this prior to being in the moment. The best option is to pay upon completion and inspection of items.
Each mover is different and they have different ways of dealing with reimbursement of damaged items. Most movers will offer full or partial value coverage and you would be wise to consult your insurance agent before you make a move.
Make sure that when you move you pack an easily recognizable box with the items you will need immediately upon arrival (Toothpaste, towels, toilet paper etc.). You will want to either move this on your own in a separate car or have the moving company load it very last so you have quick access.
