Port Vila Laidback Paradise

Hardly any countries's can claim their capital as laidback and quaint as Port Vila, Vanuatu capital. This island nation stretches across the South Pacific, like a chain of 83 emeralds, with Port Vila as the largest city in the chain. Located on Efate island, the city is the pulsing heart of the nation and home to more than 50% of the nation's population. The city is famed for its deep-water port, as well as the number of businesses and shipping concerns located here. You will not find any tall buildings here, though. The city is low lying, more a town than a true city in the western sense.
A Great Destination
For all that laidback style, Port Vila is still an incredible destination and the best place from which to begin your exploration of Vanuatu islands. Numerous charter ships are available in Port Vila harbor; 5-star resorts dot the beaches and the inland area boasts lush jungle growth, prime for exploration. Vanuatu Air, the nation's only local airline, also has its home base at the Port Vila International Airport.
Plenty to See and Do
Visitors to Port Vila will find many things to see and do in the city. Duty free shopping, local markets, incredible beaches and pristine waters all beg for exploration. Vanuatu resorts in Port Vila, while small compared to mega-resorts in other parts of the world, provide excellent accommodations, many of them boasting great restaurants frequented by the locals, expats and tourists. Enjoying the city of Port Vila is an easy thing to do, no matter what your preferences.
Local Markets in Port Vila

The city's major industries remain agriculture and fishing. You'll find that reflected in the locals markets in Port Vila, as well. Fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms, the freshest seafood and more are all available in the Port Vila marketplaces. The largest market place is located not far from the docks, giving you a central location for all your shopping needs. Besides foodstuffs, you will be able to find handicrafts and souvenirs here.
Bislama Language
Concerned about a language barrier? Don't be. While Bislama is the most frequently spoken language in the city, English and French are also widely spoken. If you didn't know, Bislama is a pidgin language, with English as one of the roots. Making yourself understood won't be a problem in this beautiful city. All resorts and most shopkeepers speak English, as well as almost all waiters in the city. Port Vila area restaurants are also renowned for the diversity of food and drink, including Kava.
