Palmerston North Often Overlooked By Tourists

Situated on the banks of the Manawatu River, Palmerston North is the main centre of the pastoral Manawatu region. Nestled at the foot of the impressive Tararua Mountain Range, the early growth of the town owed much to the development of pastoral farming in the area.

Though often overlooked by tourists, the town acts as a major crossroads, linking the North Islands major roads in all directions. It has a relaxed feel and provides a pleasant stopover point on route to Wellington down highway 1.

The towns name lends itself to the third Viscount Palmerston with the north added to differentiate between its namesakes in south island in 1871. Home to 78,000 residents and with a big student population it rests at the foot of the Tararua Mountain Ride.

Palmerston North is primarily known as a university town, with New Zealands second largest university, Massey, is located here.

The town hosts a handful of tourist attractions.

It is centred on The Square a seven hectare green space at its heart and all roads into the city lead to here. The Westside of city is best known for its arts and culture with several noted museums and theatres, while Manawatu Sports Stadium heads the list of the numerous sporting venues, including the All Blacks training ground at the NZRU Institute of Rugby.

On the outskirts of the city, stretching along the shores of the River Manawatu is Esplanade Park, which is noted for its gardens, native bush and walking tracks.

There is a relaxed atmosphere to this university town and many of its activities reflect this from a pleasant stroll through the picturesque gardens or beside the river to the chance to browse the museums or art galleries. Perhaps the biggest draw amongst the museums on offer in Palmerston North is the New Zealand Rugby Museum. Housing a number of interesting exhibits and memorabilia documenting the history of the game, both in New Zealand and in other rugby playing nations, the museum commemorates the most popular sport in this very sporting nation.

For those seeking more active pursuits, Manawatu Gorge is located about 15 km out of the town and offers jet boating, horse trekking, abseiling and drift rafting options.
