Informaiton About Loch Lomond, Its Surrounding Towns And Its History

Loch Lomond is the second largest loch of Scotland and has the largest surface area of fresh water in Britain. It is a part of Trossachs national park, the first national park in Scotland; some of it is at least. The loch is twenty four miles long, five miles wide at the largest, and the average depth is six hundred and twenty feet.

Loch Lomond's title of largest body of fresh water in Great Britain is based on its surface area. Lochness has a larger volume of water then Loch Lomond. Lochness water volume is only surpassed in water volume by Ireland's Lough Neagh. Loch Lomond contains about sixty islands based on the water level; on one of these islands, called Inchmurrin is a hotel and restaurant.

Loch Lomond is surrounded by nine towns. Balloch to the south of the loch, Gartocharn and Drymen to the south east, Balmaha on the eastern shore, Rowardennan on the north eastern shore, Tarbet and Arrochar in the north, Inverbeg in the northwest and Luss on the western shore.

The main town located by the Loch is considered to be Balloch. Balloch has become known as the gateway to the Highlands, This is probably because Balloch is located only forty five minutes away from Glasgow the largest city in Scotland. It is the main town for entering into Trossachs national park. The town has become the main location for the Loch Lomond games; the town also hosts the Official Scottish Highland Games Association world heavy weight championship.

The towns around Loch Lomond are full of Bed and Breakfast inns, but there is not much besides that. The loch of course offers boat rides as well as few water sports such as water skiing. If you're a person interested in golf than Scotland is the best place to visit as well as Loch Lomond, here there are plenty of places to golf in beautiful surroundings including Buchanan castle golf club. Which offers the chance to visit a breath taking landmark and enjoy a hobby simultaneously?

In all Loch Lomond and its surrounding villages are not a place a person would go for vast excitement and it is relatively a calm and beautiful place. Of course surrounding the Loch there are a few castles to visit in varying states of decay including Buchanan castle a place that was once home to a clan that had been great warriors from before 1016 up until sometime around the late 1500s. The original castle Buchanan that housed the clan had been burned down in 1852, but was rebuilt by the fourth duke of Montrose in 1854.

Another very famous clan is the Macgregors; they were the primary branch of a clan called Alpin. The Macgregors were not a very well liked clan by the other nearby clans, this caused the other clans to attempt a removal of the Macgregors, however the Macgregors fought valiantly and managed to keep their land and were hence forth known as a very strong and resilient clan.
