Get It On, Benidorm
In a world where package holidays reign supreme and cheap holidays can often cost as much as a weekly food shop, it is no surprise that so many people are choosing to flock to foreign shores. These cheap deals are obviously not going to take you to 5* luxury island retreats, instead purpose built tourist resorts reign supreme. They may not offer deep historical ties, rich culture or isolated havens but they do provide everything you would need and expect from a cheap holiday destination.
One of the most famous cheap package holiday resorts is Benidorm. As soon as you say the word, images of rowdy teens, boisterous football fans and other typical holiday stereotypes come flooding in. The TV show of the same name parodies the resorts reputation for being 'Blackpool in the sun', however even the most grotesque of characters on the show haven't put people off this Spanish resort.
Since the show was first aired in the UK, the popularity of the Benidorm resort has risen. Whether tourists want to enjoy the same poolside bar as Marge or even book into the hotel that the series is filmed in, Benidorm has enjoyed a renewed tourism interest thanks to this satirical comedy gem.
The Blackpool with sun' comment does seem to quite harsh however the resort is very influenced by its hordes of British visitors. Many of the restaurants, bars and cafes in the area are themed to reflect the resorts popularity with British visitors. Guests can wake up to a full English breakfast, enjoy a cup of Tetley Tea and choose from a range of fast food restaurants throughout the day. There are traditional restaurants around the resort serving local dishes but the biggest queues appear to be for Big Macs and Whoppers, it's a shame really as authentic tapas is a fantastic culinary experience!
Obviously this is not everyone's idea of a dream break; however when you think about it Benidorm offers home comforts with added sandy beaches and hot Spanish sun so it is no surprise that many find this so appealing. Break away from the commercial tourist areas and Benidorm offers even more, with golf courses, luxury spas and architecture that has been recognised by UNESCO as a contender for World Heritage Status.
Package holidays are a budget friendly, convenient way to enjoy a holiday in the sun. If you simply want to enjoy the beaches and the hot weather, why not head to Benidorm? It may not be the Seychelles but your guaranteed to find everything you need in this purpose built tourist haven.
