Run off to Whyalla City this Christmas!


Whyalla has much to offer folks looking for an run off from the regions of Andamooka, Roxby, Coober Pedy and other desert areas.
Placed approximately 395 kilometres North West of Adelaide on the Spencer Gulf in South Australia, truly Whyalla is the place where the salt bush meets the cool blue sea. Long famed for its beautiful white sandy beaches and fishing it is the perfect place to have an outback adventure in comfort.

Places to visit in Town.

Hummock Hill is one of the oldest parts of town. Just off the main Whyalla Commercial Centre take the road to the back of Harvey Norman retailers. There you can see the workings of the huge Onesteel Iron Ore plant, its shipping port where the barges take iron ore from its local mines to huge bulk carriers, ordained to the world's large companies.

Yet in complete difference the views from Hummock Hill allow you to see across the gorgeous Whyalla port and to the ancient Flinders Ranges across the Spencer Gulf. Often shrouded in mist, the tones of the ocean change, as does the tides. On the western side of the Hill you can see jade green ocean recede across the sandbanks to complete white sandy beach at the turn of the excessive tide.

You can see the fishing enthusiasts persuing their game. Snapper is the prized fish, with persons coming as distant as Alice Springs and Victoria to wet their lines for this tasty epicurean delight.

A stroll along the foreshore of Whyalla is a favourite thing to do early morning, late mid afternoon and before sunset. See the locals walking out a kilometre or more trolling for crabs in the low tide. Or fishing for a variety of different fish species, from the jetty.

A family pod of Dolphins are residents of the marina, often with babies they will swim right up to the pontoons and check on the folks watching them. Following the boats in and out and riding the waves these are a little known secret attraction to Whyalla.


Just across the bay at Point Lowly a half hour or so drive to the east of Whyalla, are many more scenic attractions. Again the views across the Spencer Gulf are magnificent. The hues of the cool blue sea change from a deep cobalt to an emerald green. The Dolphins from the port are often seen playing in their pods or trailing a boat counting on a free lunch.

Again a peculiar difference as you enter seeing the huge Santos Gas plant where gas from the desert Moomba fields are exported in huge gas bulk carrier ships to international destinations. Past the plant and passing through some ram shackle beach huts you see the Point Lowly Lighthouse. A gorgeous old building with so much nautical history on the very tip standing proud and defiant against all the Spencer can throw at her.

Apart from the environmental attractions Whyalla offers a host of Big Name Stores, including Spotlight, Harris Scarf, Harvey Normans, and Dick Smith. Westland's is the big retail centre that boasts over 50 speciality shops with 7 day trading.

Middleback Theatre provides regular cinema and theatrical performances that will keep all members of the family entertained.
