Enjoying The Beautiful Dartmouth Devon
Visiting the town of Dartmouth - Devon County, is a trip back in history. Its Dart River location, in 1127-1190, was the sail point for the crusades. It was also famous for its pirates, which were authorized by the king to conduct their raids. The Royal Navy is prominent in the town with the Royal Navy training college where all of their officers are trained.
The town can be reached by personal boat, three ferries or by a bridge that is eleven miles away. There are three ferries called the Higher Ferry, the Lower Ferry and the Passenger Ferry. The Passenger Ferry carries only people and is used mainly as a connecting point with the steam railway at Kingswear station. The other two ferries carry automobiles. These automobiles can be left in the park and ride area where transportation is provided into town and allows for exploration without heavy traffic.
The mild climate of the area makes it a pleasure to ride on the upper deck of the ferry and enjoy the view. As the ferry progresses toward the dock one has a beautiful view of the town with its high cliffs in the background. Roaming through the dock area there a number of interesting shops to explore.
Many delightful restaurants serve gourmet meals that will satisfy even the most discriminating food connoisseur. One restaurant of particular interest is a railway station restaurant even though there is no railway in the town. At one time, there was a plan for one and the station was built but the railroad plans were not completed.
Those interested in sailing or boating will find the deep port an excellent place to dock their boats. Coming into this delightful harbor one will find many businesses available to care for the sailor's needs. Docking and then exploring the town is an excellent addition to the adventures of one's journey.
Dartmouth has three lovely beaches. They are Bigbury on Sea, Blackpool Sands and Callaborough Beach. Each has different attractions. Callaborough Beach is especially enjoyed by surfers and has very interesting rock pools to investigate.
Nearby attractions, include adventure parks, two nature reserves and other interesting areas to explore. In addition there are many local events to enjoy such as the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, which is held the last three days of August. Accommodations are excellent with bed and breakfast, guesthouses, hotels and camping.
