Haverfordwest - Pembrokeshire is a charming little town located in Wales that has a population of around 14,000 inhabitants. It is situated in the heart of Pembrokeshire right on the the River Cleddau.The town's biggest claim to fame is the medieval castle that guards the town from above. Haverfordwest is located only 250 kilometers from London, so it is an ideal weekend away spot where you can have fun as well as unwind.
Haverfordwest is dominated by the 12th century medieval castle, which was first built by Gilbert de Clare Earl of Pembroke. The castle is in ruins, but it has a fascinating history and was visited by King Rochard II and Oliver Cromwell. As well as the castle, there is a museum and the ruins of an Augustinian Priory alongside the river. Visiting the abbey is another indication of the town's vast history.
Right near Haverfordwest there is the Graham Sutherland Gallery, which is housed in Picton Castle. The gallery is filled with landscapes and other paintings by the artist. The castle is an Edwardian fortress and features gorgeous gardens with many of the plants having been transplanted from Scotland's famous Lochinch Gardens.
In summer Haverfordwest welcomes bunches of tourists who come to enjoy the national parks and the beautiful scenery afforded by the coastline and rugged cliffs. The area is very hilly and there are a number of excellent nature trails that hikers can enjoy. There are guided walks for visitors to the area taking in some of the most popular routes.
Haverfordwest is a market town that is home to an award winning farmer's market. And for the gourmand there is a wide range of restaurants, cafes and bistros to eat in. Around the town center there are interesting pubs, a good range of accommodation and shopping in some of the quaint little stores about town.
Nearby the town is St David's Cathedral, which was originally the site of a 6th century monastery that was established by Wales' patron saint, David. It has been has been a site of pilgrimage for hundreds of years. The cathedral is just a few miles from the town and is easily accessible for a short trip.
