Copenhagen An Exciting Place To See

Situated on the east side of the Danish Island of Zealand, this was once the home of the dreaded Vikings. This city is full of style and is a major regional center of culture, business, media and science. This city is often recognized as one of the cities with the best quality of life. This city is also very environmentally friendly, about 36% of the population rides a bicycle to work. This city can boast anywhere around 1 million international tourists a year. If you decide to make this a destination at some point in your life here are some things you may want to see or do!

Check out the rides.

Copenhagen has two of the oldest known amusement parks in the world: Tivoli Gardens (located right in the middle of Copenhagen) and Dyrehavsbakken (located in Klampenborg). While this fact may not be motivational for anyone to get on the oldest roller coaster or the oldest operating ferris wheel in the world, it can still be a neat thing to see. Dyrehavsbakken was made into an amusement park complete with rides, games and restaurants by Christain IV, and is the oldest surviving amusement park in the world.

See some green!

Kings Garden, also known as the garden of Rosenborg Castle, this is the oldest and most popular park in Copenhagen. Its landscaping was started by Christian IV in 1606. In the summer months, this park is packed with ballplayers, sunbathers, and all sorts of people. It serves as a sculpture garden as well with permanent and temporary exhibits during the summer. This park sees as many as 2.5 million visitors a year.

Also located in the city centre are the botanical gardens, noted for their greenhouses donated by Carslberg founder J.C. Jacobsen. The largest park in Copenhagen would be Faelledparken. It is popular for sports, and has lots of events every year. There is a free opera concert at the beginning of every opera season here; there are other open air concerts to be seen as well. There is a carnival, and also Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix which is a race for antique cars.

Get a Danish.

The Danish, or Danish pastry has become a sweet specialty of Denmark and the nearby countries. This pastry is quite popular today, and its forms can vary significantly from country to country. It is said that this pastry originated from Vienna, as did the Croissant. The ingredients include flour, milk, yeast, and egg to make this delight; typically the dough is coated with butter and folded into several layers. There are several different flavors, it can be topped with chocolate, sugar or icing, and may be stuffed with jam, marzipan or custard. In the US and Canada Danishes are typically given a fruit or sweet bakers cheese prior to baking.

Hear the music.

The new Copenhagen Concert Hall was opened January 2009. It has four halls with the main auditorium seating 1800 people. This will be the home for the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. This is one of the most expensive concert halls ever built. An important stop if you are interested in music is also the Tivoli Concert Hall in Tivoli Gardens.
Copenhagen is revolutionary in ways, as is many other European cities when it comes to the environment and their way of life. This city should definitely be high on your list of places to visit; it is certainly a sight to behold.
