Australia, A Cost Of Living Comparison
One of the biggest things that you need to think about when planning an Australian migration is the cost of living in the country. However, as you later find out, this cost actually varies from state to state. And so, to help you decide where, you would want to live in, here's a quick comparison of the cost of living among different areas in the country.
In terms of housing, the city of Sydney, and New South Wales in general, probably has the highest cost for a new home. In particular, a unit in Sydney will set you back around AU$ 500,000. However, this also varies within the city itself, with houses in the suburbs costing as little as 300,000 Australian dollars. Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is also of comparable cost to that of Sydney.
On the other hand, Hobart is the city with the lowest cost of housing. A unit here will cost you only around AU$ 260,000. And another thing that will actually draw you to this capital of Tasmania is the fact that there are still a few people living here, as compared to other major cities in the country. This means that you will still have a good choice of the place where you want to move in.
One thing that you would want to take note is the cost of housing in the Northern Territory, particularly in the city of Darwin. A house here will actually be double that of Hobart and is comparable to that of Sydney. However, this one is really not that surprising, considering the inaccessibility of some of the Northern Territory's settlement.
And this is the part that you would want to take the cost of other necessities into consideration. One thing in particular that you will be likely concerned with is the cost of transportation. For those who have their own cars, Tasmania will have a bit of a higher cost for pertrol than the mainland. However, since most of the distances in the island are relatively short, this will actually amount to fewer fuel consumption and thus, lower cost. On the other hand, be ready when traveling in the Northern Territory, where the distances between towns are often quite large, which equates to larger fuel costs.
On the other hand, the costs of other items will vary between states, depending on their availability. For instance, seafoods and other marine items will naturally be lower in costal cities, like Brisbane or Syney. You can then use these to calculate how much you will likely incur on expenses.
